I Cry When I Worship

Hi friends!

I cry when I worship. Seriously, I do! Not every time, of course, but there are just days when I really think about what I am singing and it brings me to tears.

I‘m usually working out my lacrimal glands when I’m in the car. I can turn up the music so loud, it’s like I am surrounded by the song and I can’t think of anything else, so I’m only focused on that moment with God. I don’t cry because I am sad — they’re happy tears! It’s hard not to think about how much God loves me when you’re singing like that. Or sometimes, I just miss heaven. I know I haven’t been there yet, but have you ever read that quote from C.S. Lewis that’s like, “if we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world”? Holy cow do I resonate with that quote. It’s like I’m homesick, but not for a place I can go to yet.

Songs that talk about God’s will for my life, His love for me, or just songs with intentional, genuine lyrics in general are the best ones. I love love love Chris Rezema. “I Don’t Wanna Go” is like the best song I have ever listened to to this day, I think. He is just so honest with his music and it feels so real. Not just some songs you hear on the radio that sound like they’re trying to copy pop songs or something that are straining for typical lyrics. I love K-Love, don’t get me wrong, but I can only listen for like one day every once in a while because they just play the same hokey pokey songs all. The. Time. There’s definitely amazing artists played, but I feel like I can find songs that move me and make me think more often when I look outside of the mainstream Christian hit list.

What music do I listen to? Here’s a hodge-podge list of artists and songs I really love!

  • Audrey Assad (especially ”Good to Me”)

  • CHRIS RENZEMA (his album “I’ll Be the Branches” is so good)

  • ”Peace” by Bethel Music and We The Kingdom

  • ”House of Miracles” by Brandon Lake (his kids are in the background in this song and I just think it is a beautiful image of a family worshipping together)

  • Page CXVI (this artist reimagines hymns like no other)

  • ”Remedy” by Red Rocks Worship

Honestly, I think so many people are missing out on the feeling of true worship. It’s like a musical hug between you and God. I can’t really explain it. I just feel so cathartic and moved. It‘s inspiring as a Christian when you worship because it reminds you why we’re hear at all. We should not be doing anything other than living for God. Obviously that looks different for everybody — for me, it means becoming a PA to help heal others and talking about Jesus a lot and being the church secretary and smiling at random people and inviting people over and giving people plants and sending random encouraging texts and perhaps writing a blog that maybe someday one person will read and gain something. I don’t know. All I know is that I love the Trinity so deeply with all of my being that I would do literally anything to serve God. And I guess one of the ways I revel and roll around in that deep, deep love is by crying in my car when I’m singing close to in tune, but not quite lol.

I hope you enjoyed reading my honest thoughts.

-Katie :-)
